About Us

SHINE stands for Serving Him IN Everything.

Our Story

A place for meaningful work, growth, and belonging.

"A contributing member of society" is a phrase parents often consider when contemplating the future of their children with special needs. A handful of those parents asked what that could look like for their adult sons and daughters in the Joplin area.

Looking around, they found only a few programs, limited job opportunities, and long waiting lists for vocational venues tailored for adults with special needs. Those parents, along with leaders of the disabilities ministry of College Heights Christian Church, decided to start their own faith-based day program.

SHINE helps adults with disabilities find religious, educational, and physical enrichment, vocational opportunities, social interaction, and a place to serve the community. SHINE launched in July 2021 as a small pilot program and continues to grow with new members, volunteers, and staff.
